
Workshop | Live Music Photography with Rafs Mayet

Legendary photographer, Rafs Mayet, shared his expansive knowledge and archive, as well as the do’s and don’ts of making photos of live performances at the Centre for Creative Arts, 30 September 2023. At this workshop, Mayet shared his experience photographing live music and performance. Collectively, the photographers part of CAP’s Incubator Edition Two looked at each other’s works and unpacked the meanings, and what next they can do to create a new body of work.
Rafs Mayet is a South African photographer whose career began in the early 1980s as a member of the Afrapix collective.
Mayet is well known for documenting local communities, notably in Durban’s Warwick Triangle, and for his documentation of political gatherings and marches. He is particularly acclaimed for photographing live performances by jazz musicians, with much of this work centred on the iconic Rainbow club in Pinetown.
