Forming part of this archive are two projects, which intersect however diverge. The first series, Faith & Ambiguity, focuses on Walsh-Vorster’s relationship with the Methodist Church and its community, specifically in KwaZulu-Natal. The second series, untitled, focuses “on bodies and water and bodies of water”. “Faith & Ambiguity offers a glimpse into my understanding of the Methodist Church through the way the church makes space for human connections and relationship building. Many of the photographs were made in public places of worship, private homes of ministers or congregation members, as well as office spaces. The Faith & Ambiguity series includes family moments reflecting everyday activities at home, away from the walls of a Methodist church. It presents moments of a Sunday service to provide context and reveal the quiet ways people are at church. Water serves as a symbolic element, representing quiet and tranquillity, while moments of solitude, such as being on a phone or looking out a window, convey a sense of reflection. However, my closeness to the subject matter and people in the stories can offer a disquiet narrative to some of the more chaotic experiences of people’s lives even within a religious space.” “Since 2019, my photographic focus has been on the relationship between individuals, inclusive of myself, and bodies of water. This encompasses a spectrum of interactions – from engaging in physical activities and sports to embracing water as a medium for spiritual rituals and healing practices. Moments of endurance and mental fortitude, as well as spaces that symbolise freedom and serve as spaces for celebration (hello, New Years Day, the most thrilling of them all in Durban). This body of work further explores how race, class and gender cannot be reduced to the sameness of experience. These facets of human experience defy simplification into a uniform narrative, whether in the creation of photographic works or their interpretation. There is intrinsic value in recognising and navigating the Intersectional complexities that permeate the processes of creating, showcasing, and archiving works – a perspective that has begun to extend across various aspects of my personal views on life. Within this series, the narrative surrounding water reinforces the notion that there is no singular story to be told.”
